«National Museum of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945» was officially opened In Kiev in 1981 on Victory Day. On May 9th of 1981 this complex solemnly opened a former Secretary General Leonid Brezhnev. The central figure in the museum is a 90-feet tall "Mother Motherland" sculpture. The sculpture of this size was made for the first time in the USSR .

In one hand «Mother» holds a 16-meter sword weighing 9 tons, and in another - a shield (13x8) with the Soviet Union arms on it. Shield weights 13 tons. The total weight of the structure is 450 tons, and the height - 102 metres. In the “feet” of the monument situated expositions of WW2 museum.
Every year «Mother Motherland» monument in Kiev is thoroughly examined. According to the experts the monument "Motherland" must stand for more than 150 years. According to calculations the monument can withstand even an earthquake of 9 points.

Popular legend tells that during the erection of the monument, the Metropolitan of Kiev was negotiating with the first secretary of the Communist Party, Vladimir Shcherbitsky about the sculpture. Metropolitan told that if sword become higher than the Great Lavra Bell Tower, which is located in the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, Kiev will meet many disasters. This message really scared communists and they decided to shorten the sword of the statue, which is now below the top of the bell tower at 12 meters.
