In the beginning of 20th century was made a decision of constructing a new building for a Kiev central bank (in those times division of the Petersburg State Bank) because of the rapid development of the financial sector of Russian Empire. In autumn 1902 the construction of a new building, which is a modern structure of the National Bank of Ukraine was began. Bank building down the street Institutska was finished in 1905. The bank building was constructed by the project's of civil engineers A. Kobeleva and M.Verbitskogo. Participation in the competition for the development of the project involved even the famous architect V. Gorodetsky, but his plan was not approved.

To achieve the best possible performance of work, committee members decided not to give the project "in one hands." Applications for participation in the construction filed about a hundred firms. As a result there were about twenty-contractors, performing different types of works including the South-Russian machine-building plant, Ginsburg building company, Schmidt Bronikovskogo and Sommer building companies, Schwarzenberg and Safonov building companies and others. Performance of works of art inside the building was entrusted to Italian sculptor Elio Salle.

The new bank building was provided with all the modern technological innovation of those times - equipped with central heating, electric lighting, dual ventilation system - injection and exhaust. In 1933 the size of the bank no longer meet its needs (the building was two storey), and it was decided to finish two more floors. Already in the late 1934 all the works have been completed.
The building of the National Bank of Ukraine fully preserved it’s great appearance and internal decorations to nowadays and considered to be one of the masterpieces of architecture of Pechersk district .
